BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency & Refugee Rights takes a rights-based approach to the Palestinian refugee issue through research, advocacy and support of community participation in the search for durable solutions based on Palestinian refugees' right of return. BADIL promotes enforcement of international law, including Palestinian refugee rights, through a global civil society campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it abides with international law. BADIL was established in 1998; its offices are located in Bethlehem, Palestine. (see also: www.badil.org)

 

The Information Officer is responsible for implementation and development of the BADIL media-information strategy, including production, dissemination and promotion, in order to improve quality, outreach and impact of BADIL information. Thematic focus: Palestinian refugee rights and international law enforcement.

 

BADIL is looking for dynamic candidates with a track record of skills and previous experience in information outreach and media work, advocacy, lobbying and campaigning.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Key responsibilities of the Information Officer:

 

-          coordination of production of the BADIL English-language magazine Al-Majdal (4 issues per year), editing and writing assistance;

-          writing of press releases, briefs, op-eds, and articles;

-          dissemination and promotion of BADIL publications/information and the Palestinian civil society BDS campaign electronically and in personal meetings with journalists, local and international organizations and policy makers;

-          contribute to development of a pro-active BADIL information outreach and advocacy policy by new and creative means;

-          undertaking relevant administrative work to support this work, including developing and maintaining mailing lists.

 

Candidate Specification, including qualifications:

 

Formal education:

Minimum B.A. in social/political science, journalism, or legal studies (public international law, in particular humanitarian and human rights law)

 

Minimum required experience:

-      At least 2 years of successful previous employment in comparable work with another professional NGO/institution;

-      A proven track record in successful media-information work and policy influencing work, including experience of developing advocacy strategies.

 

Sound knowledge and understanding of:

-      relevant international law, conventions and UN resolutions;

-      history and politics of the Palestinian/Arab – Zionist conflict and the Palestinian refugee issue;

-      local and international organizations, journalists and information outlets operating in Palestine and abroad.

 

Skills:

-         Excellent English language skills;

-         Very good communication skills with ability to influence change by means of writing and oral presentations;

-      Good team-working skills, including the ability to inspire and encourage effective team working;

-      Very good journalistic writing skills;

-      Good computer-based research and networking skills;

-      Strong analytical, strategic thinking, planning and information management skills;

-      Project management, documenation and reporting;

-      Readiness and ability to work under pressure;

-      Commitment to the rights of the Palestinian people under international law;

-      Readiness, in principle, for a llong-term commitment to BADIL.

 

Preference will be given to Palestinian/female applicants pending equal qualifications and skills.

 

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS AND BENEFITS

 

-      Full-time position at the BADIL offices in Bethlehem. Candidates must be ready to live in the Bethlehem area to ensure regular access to their place of work;

-      Benefits according to local BADIL salary policy;

-      Initial recruitment based on a three-month contract and 75% salary;

-      Long-term employment and career advancement options available.
