Durable solutions for refugees and
internally displaced persons (IDPs) include the right of return, the
right to repossess homes and properties, and the right to compensation
for losses and damages. These rights are anchored in several bodies of
international law, including humanitarian law, human rights law, and refugee law. In the Palestinian refugee case, these rights are also
anchored in several UN resolutions, including
General Assembly Resolution 194(III) and
UN Security Council Resolution 237.
1. Write to your government to request
information on their position on durable solutions for Palestinian
refugees and IDPs. Ask them what their position has been in other
refugee and IDP cases – e.g., Guatemala, Bosnia, Kosovo, etc. If your
government does not support refugee rights in the Palestinian case,
request clarification and provide them with further information on
refugee and IDP rights from BADIL and other sources – e.g., position
papers by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
