Palestine Solidarity Campaign with Adhoc Humanitarians Orchestra present
Great Big “Viva Palestina!” Orchestral Concert for Gaza
7.30pm, Saturday 24th October 2009
St Augustine’s Church
117 Queen’s Gate, London, SW7 5LP
Adhoc Humanitarians Orchestra, together with its conductors, soloists and interval musicians, brings together a staggeringly generous array of some of the best professional and top amateur musicians in and around London, determined to give their time for free, to play because they care about the plight of the world, love the music and enjoy making a difference, with pizzazz. All donations raised by all of our concerts go direct to the humanitarian charities, intact because, uniquely, all orchestral and concert costs are funded separately. In 2003 and 2004 the orchestra played acclaimed concerts for Palestine, Romania and Tibet and this is the first project the orchestra has undertaken in 2009, returning once again to Palestine. Adhoc Humanitarians Orchestra – “Altruism in Tune”.
Conductor: Andrew Gourlay
Award winning conductor Andrew Gourlay has conducted the St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra whilst studying with Polianichko in Russia as well as The Marriage of Figaro at the Britten Theatre, and was selected in 2008 to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra in a public masterclass with Valery Gergiev.
Andrew has presented The Early Music Show on BBC Radio 3 and appeared as a musician in Kenneth Branagh’s film adaptation of The Magic Flute. Current projects include conducting for the BBC’s Discovering Music programme, working at the Royal Ballet as Cover Conductor for Barry Wordsworth, as well as concerts with both the Kensington Symphony and Kensington Chamber orchestras.
“Andrew Gourlay is one of the most exciting young conductors I have ever seen and he is a joy to watch." Dame Judi Dench
Rachmaninov – Isle of the Dead
Isle of the Dead, Op. 29, a symphonic poem composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff and inspired by Arnold Böcklin's painting Isle of the Dead is considered a classic example of Russian late-Romanticism of the beginning of the 20th century. The main themes in Isle of the Dead are based on water movement, and depicts breathing, creating a holistic reflection on how life and death are intertwined.
Shostakovich – 10th Symphony
In content and structure, the 10th Symphony is perhaps the finest example of Dmitri Shostakovich’s ingenious synthesis of allusions to the symphonic tradition on the one hand, and encoded references to his own particular time and place on the other. Composed of a variation of fast and slow movements, the 10th Symphony is influenced by Mahler and based on themes relating to personal identity. The principal theme, heard calling through the orchestra on French Horn, is a passionate evocation of love.
There will be a long, 30 minute interval, as well as post-concert continuation, with music provided by international and Palestinian artists
