Registration is now open for the Seventh Al-Awda Award Competition

1. Al-Awda Award for the best Poster: Friday, 12 April 2013.
2. Al-Awda Award for the best Caricature for World Refugee Day: Friday, 31 May 2013.
3. Al-Awda Award for the best Photography: Friday, 31 May 2013.
4. Al-Awda Award for the best Children's Story: Friday, 31 May 2013.

“On Sunday, 7 July 2013 al-Awda prizes for the winning works will be awarded in honor of World Refugee Day (20 June).”


General Rules and Regulations

The following provisions and clarifications apply to all fields. Please also refer to the specific rules and regulations to each category.

  1. Participants must adhere to the rules and regulations for the competition category in which they wish to participate;

  2. Participation is open to all, regardless of nationality, place of residence or age;

  3. Submissions must be original and previously unpublished;

  4. Any entry containing discriminatory symbols or reflections on the basis of race, gender or religion or any other basis, will be excluded from the competition;

  5. Participants can only submit one submission per competition category only, but may participate in more than one category;

  6. BADIL commits to publishing the winning submissions as separate publications or as part of BADIL's regular publications, as specified for each competition category;

  7. BADIL will announce winning works, and award the prizes and honorary prizes, during the World Refugee Day events on Thursday, 4 July 2013.

  8. The award is judged by an independent and professional jury. BADIL and participants are obliged to accept the decision and recommendations of the jury;

  9. BADIL reserves the right to keep, use, edit and publish all submissions at its discretion, while respecting the intellectual property rights of the participants;

  10. All submissions should include: a Curriculum Vitae and contact information (including address, phone number and email address);

  11. Submissions can be delivered in one of the following ways:

BADIL commits to confirming receipt of each submission in writing.

Category 1: Al-Awda Award for the best Nakba Commemoration Poster

The selected posters will commemorate the Palestinian Nakba by drawing on themes of the 1948 Nakba, the ongoing nature of the Nakba, forced displacement, putting special emphasis on the resistance to ongoing forced displacement, and Palestinians' connection to the land and to the right of return.

Specific Rules Regulations

  1. The poster is not required to include written text, but if the design does include written text, the Arabic language is to be the main language used;

  2. The poster must be original and previously unpublished, with a clear and original message;

  3. Posters submitted in previous Al-Awda Award contests will not be accepted;

  4. For submissions prepared with the use of computers and image-editing software, please use CMYK for color printing settings;

  5. Submissions will not be returned to the artists;

  6. The submission must be on A3 canvas size (300mm X 420mm) in high resolution (at least 250-300 DPI) and saved as a (.jpg) file;

Remember, the deadline for entries in this category is Friday, 12 April 2013.


The value of the award:
• First prize: 2000 US Dollars
• Second Prize: 1000 US Dollars
• Third prize: 700 US Dollars


In addition, BADIL will:
• Print 40,000 copies of the poster that wins the first prize, which will be distributed throughout historic Palestine and to all countries participating in the Nakba commemoration events.
• Organize an exhibition of the best posters chosen by the jury.
• Award up to ten honorable mentions based on the decisions of the jury, which will also be distributed at the 2013 Awards Ceremony.

 

Category 2: Best Caricature for World Refugee Day

The selected caricatures will reflect the international bias in favor of Israel, on the expense of Palestinian Refugees, particularly their right to return.
Specific Rules and Regulations

  1. Use of computers and image-editing software is permitted;

  2. The submission must be on A4 canvas size (210mm X 297mm); submitted as a JPEG file; quality 300 DPI;

  3. Original copies of non-digital or hand-drawn submissions (ink/ water-colors/ oil on paper, etc.) should be mailed to BADIL to ensure the highest quality scanning and storing;

  4. Submissions may be black and white or in color;

  5. The jury will evaluate the works based on clarity of their messages, and the quality of their manifestations.

The value of the award:
• First prize: 1000 US Dollars
• Second prize: 800 US Dollars
• Third prize: 600 US Dollars


In addition, BADIL will:
• A printed version of the first prize winner to be published in more than 5000 copies. Those will be distributed during World refugee Day events worldwide.
• Organize an exhibition of the best caricatures chosen by the jury.
• Award up to ten honorable mentions based on the decisions of the jury, which will also be distributed at the 2013 Awards Ceremony.


Category 3: Al-Awda Youth Photography Award

The selected photographs will reflect the effects and consequences of the Palestinian Nakba, the means of confronting the challenges created by the Nakba, and/or the Palestinian refugee experience.

Specific Rules and Regulations

  1. Photographs can be in color or black and white;

  2. Photographs must be in their original state, i.e. they should not be edited through image manipulation programs. If an edited photo is submitted, it must be accompanied by the original unedited photo;

  3. Participants should not place any text on the photos (including the name of the photographer);

  4. Submissions must be in high resolution (300 DPI) and sent as a .jpg file;

  5. Photographs must be innovative, original and reflect a current subject. Previously published photographs and those submitted to other contests will not be accepted;

  6. While BADIL will make every effort to disqualify plagiarized submissions, BADIL is not legally responsible for any error relating to photographers' intellectual property rights;

  7. BADIL reserves the right to use all submissions in this category while respecting the intellectual property rights of the participants;

  8. Photographs should be sent by email as separate attachments. Participants should also attach a Word Document with a brief caption (no more than 50 words) describing the photograph (time, place, people, description, etc. as appropriate).

The value of the award:
• First prize: 900 US Dollars
• Second prize: 600 US Dollars
• Third prize: 400 US Dollars

BADIL will also:
• Print and publish winning photos in various BADIL publications.
• Organize an exhibition of the best photos chosen by the jury.
• Award up to ten honorable mentions based on the decisions of the jury, which will also be distributed at the 2013 Awards Ceremony.

 

Category 4: Al-Awda Award for Children's Stories

Selected stories will address, from the viewpoint of Palestinian refugee children, issues of Palestinian identity through national symbols like the land, flag, olive tree and so on.
Specific Rules and Regulations

  1. Stories must be suitable for children under 10 years of age;

  2. The submission must be in Arabic, either Modern Standard or colloquial;

  3. The word limit for submissions is 200 words;

  4. Participants are encouraged to submit their drawings to the stories. Depending on their quality, drawings may be published with the stories, subject to the approval of the jury;

  5. Winning submissions will be subject to editing prior to publication;

  6. Participants should format their submissions as Word files (.doc);

  7. Copies will not be returned to the participants.

The value of the award:
• First prize: 2000 US Dollars
• Second prize: 1000 US Dollars
• Third prize: 700 US Dollars


BADIL will also:
• Publish the first three winning submissions either as part of BADIL's regular publications or as a separate publication.
• Give each winner 100 printed copies of their story.
• Award up to ten honorable mentions based on the decisions of the jury, which will also be distributed at the 2013 Awards Ceremony.
