On 15 May 2016, the Global Palestinian Refugee Network organized a central event in Bethlehem to commemorate the 68th anniversary of the Nakba and to denounce the ongoing Israeli policies on colonization, apartheid and forced population transfer, which make the Palestinian reality an ongoing Nakba. Several hundred Palestinian refugees marched from Dheisheh refugee camp towards the center of Bethlehem, where they demonstrated to reaffirm their Rights of Return to their original villages and to Self-Determination, under the slogan “Return is our Right and our Will”.
Mimicking the dream of return, a symbolic "Train of Return" led the march from Dheisheh camp, towards the stations of Beit Jibrin refugee camp and Aida refugee camp. During the journey activists on the train were calling on the refugees to bring the keys of their original homes and to embark on the train of return. When they reached the Annexation and Separation Wall, in the north of Bethlehem, the Israeli army attacked the march and the train, shooting dozens of tear gas canisters and rubber bullets at the demonstrators.
This event was one of many organized by the Global Palestinian Refugee Network on both sides of the Green Line and in the diaspora in commemoration of the Nakba.
