Community Engagement and Empowerment: “We are from there” Online Q&A Contest
On Wednesday 14 December 2016, the Global Palestinian Refugee Network (GPRN) announced the winners of the first ever online Q&A under the title “We are from there” led by BADIL, a member of the GPRN. The contest is part of BADIL’s new approach to engage and empower Palestinian civil society through online mechanisms. The virtual contest was launched on 10/11/2016, in Arabic and contained three incremental phases. Each phase contained 10 questions on Palestinian culture, history, literature, art and politics. In order to participate, contestants had to register online and answer all the questions correctly and in the shortest amount of time. The participants who reached and completed the third and final phase by answering all the questions correctly and in the shortest amount of time were awarded nominal monetary prizes respective of their rank (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.).
The first phase drew almost 750 participants, 90% of whom were between 18 and 45 years old, over 50% of them were females, from historic Palestine and abroad. The second phase reduced the participants to 156 and the final phase resulted in 6 winners (5 out of 6 winners were females), and 5 honorary prizes. The contest in addition to enhancing BADIL’s outreach and engagement with Palestinian civil society, focused on increasing the knowledge and awareness of youth in multiple aspects of Palestinian heritage and culture; disseminating knowledge and incentivizing people utilizing contemporary mechanisms.
BADIL looks to replicate the contest in the near future.
